Types of carpet floor

The sheer volume of carpet choices can become very confusing for buyers who want the best carpet floor for their house. The carpets are available in different styles and varieties and analyzing each type is imperative before deciding upon the choice of carpet.

MATERIALS USED

Polypropylene carpets are as soft as nylon. They resist staining and shedding.

Polyester carpets come in a variety of bright colours which do not fade over time. They are non-allergenic and are eco friendly in many cases when the material is fashioned from recycled plastic bottles. They are not suitable for areas with significant footfall because the fibers tend to get flattened due to weight.

Nylon carpets are soft and durable. They are resistant to stains and are very popular among customers.

Wool carpets are the softest variety of carpets available in the market. They last long and are natural. The drawback is that the low grade wool is susceptible to staining and the high grade ones are expensive. Some carpets have both wool and synthetic fibers to derive possess the benefit of both the materials.

TYPES OF CONSTRUCTION

Carpet floor is comes in two types of construction. They are called cut pile and loop pile.

Cut pile carpet is durable due to the fiber used, twist of the yarn and the density of the tufts. There are four styles in this type of construction. Textured, Plush, Saxony, Frieze and Cable styles.

Loop pile are durable and are regarded as an all purpose carpet. The loops are visible because the yarn tips are not cut. The styles in this construction include Level loop or Berber, Patterned multi-level loop and cut and loop.

QUALITY

The quality of a carpet depends on a variety of factors such as weight, density, fiber type and construction and twist.

The weight of the carpet is directly proportional to the amount of fibers used in it. The heavier a carpet is, the better it is. Therefore, the weight is an important consideration at the time of buying a carpet.

Density indicates the number of fibers used in the piles and the closeness of the fibers tufted together. A good quality carpet would be denser than an inferior one.

Fiber construction such as Staple, Twist, Tufting, Heat setting and Bulked continuous filament determines the durability of a carpet. Fiber types as discussed earlier such as nylon, wool. Polyester, acrylic, olefin etc partially contribute to the price, look and durability of a carpet.
