Weathering distressed wood flooring

You can give your distressed wood flooring an authentic look by simply weathering its surface, weathering is a process used to make new polished wood to look worn out. Therefore, this process is relevant especially when you need to replace a portion of your flooring.

How to weather distressed wood flooring

First, you have to identify and understand all the characteristics of your distressed wood flooring by taking note of its color, texture and wood grain. Before working on the floor, you have to ensure that it is cleaned using an appropriate wood cleanser, rinsed with clean water to get rid of any debris and then allowed to dry.

Remove the damaged wooden flooring using a putty knife and then install your new piece by either gluing or stapling it onto the existing distressed wood flooring and allow it to settle. At this juncture, it is quite obvious that the new floor is absolutely different from the rest of the floor; therefore you have to carry out a procedure that will help unify your floor.

Modifying the new wood flooring

There are several methods for modifying the replaced floor area;

  • Scrubbing the surface

You can weather the new wooden floor by scrubbing its surface with a stiff brush until you get the required uniform texture. You can also scrub the surface using steel wool but you have to ensure that you are scrubbing against its grain to get the required texture.

You can also weather the wooden floor by spreading small stones on the replaced portion and press them onto the wood to give the floor a uniform appearance.

  • Use wood stain

Wood stain is a perfect element in that it aids in weathering the new wooden surface. Stain the new wood with some wood stain and when a solid and even color appears, you can scrub it off using a scrubber until the wood is distressed because it will definitely weather the new floor area.

Modifying the color of the wood

It is also possible to use a technique that will result into the new wood resembling the color of your distressed wood flooring.  You can do this by applying wood sealer after painting it with the appropriate color and allow it to dry. When the wood is completely dry, you can scrape it using a brush with hard bristles, steel wool among other implement. This procedure helps to quickly distress the new wood flooring by reducing its original finished look.
